Secret Squirrel

When I went camping at the wood recently my nephew spotted a hole in the base of a tree right by the log store. It was small and showed signs of animal activity so I set up the nature camera nearby to see if I could snap a photo of it's resident. To be honest I was expecting it to be a mouse given it's size. I wasn't expecting this.

The hole looked far to small for a squirrel to fit down so maybe he was just sniffing around. But no! Here he is with his head poking out the hole.

Now one of just his tail poking out. It seems they can squeeze down very small holes.

It wasn't the only thing to be snapped. A passing deer at night.

So another little mystery solved thanks to the camera. I might try it by the owl box next but it's current inhabitants seem to be hornets. It certainly made me retreat back down the ladder when I went up for a look!
