Bough Down

What with the snowy weather and end of year festivities I haven't been down to the wood for a while. Happily it seemed to get through the recent snow without any noticeable damage. There was a large oak bough that had come down before the cold weather set in, which needed sorting out so I set it about it with the chainsaw.

When I starting ringing it up I could see the amazingly dark colour of the heartwood.

One concern is why such a large bough should come down after all these years and whether this is any indicator of any health problems for the tree. It was quite a sizeable branch but on the upside provided quite a bit of wood for the stove. I'll move it to a more long term wood store in time but for now have left it on a pallet with an old compost bag to keep some of the rain off.

I also had a wander around the wood to see if any mushrooms are around now. I found some Butter Caps and this one I'm still not too sure about.
